dollar a word featured artists

From time to time I will be offering for auction a piece of work by an artist. This may be a book, a painting, a CD, or pretty much anything I think is interesting. Most items will be signed by the artist.

The winning bidder will receive not only the item, but the amount of the winning bid will count as sponsored words. Bids equaling an amount of one of the sponsorship levels (see the buy words page) will entitle the winning bidder to the benefits of that sponsorship level. So, for example, if you win the auction for Gregory Maguire’s Wicked and your winning bid is $250 or more, you will get the book and you will have sponsored me for 250 words, which will entitle you to have a banner on the site. Got it?

Below is a gallery of items that have already been auctioned. Clicking on the image or the link will take you either to a place where you can purchase that item (usually unsigned) or to the artist’s personal site. By buying through the Dollaraword site, you will help add words, as any commissions I receive from sales (such as from Amazon) are added to the donation total.

A big thank you to all of the artists who have donated to the auctions. And thank you to everyone who bids on these wonderful items. Please bid generously. Not only will your winning bid support art, but you’ll be getting a fantastic addition to your collection and the benefits associated with sponsoring the site.

If you are an artist and would like to donate an item to be auctioned, please

M Christian: 07/24 to

M Christian has been called "a totally unique and truly fascinating voice," "hard-boiled, sharp-edged, funny and fierce," and "a literary streetwalker with a heart of gold." With The Very Bloody Marys he turns the crime novel on its ear.

Big trouble at night in the city. A gang of Vespa-riding vampires are killing San Franciscans so indiscriminately they threaten to not only drain the city dry—but risk the discovery of vampires everywhere. Gay vampire cop Valentino is called upon to stop the group calling themselves The Very Bloody Marys before the situation gets worse. Unfortunately, it already has. You see, Valentino is still only a trainee who is in way over his head now that Pogue, his mentor, is missing. And this brutal gang is tough, smart, and very, very bloodthirsty. To do his job, Valentino must move quickly—and carefully—otherwise he may just get himself killed. What can a creature of the night do? The only thing he can, track the gang through the haunts of some very odd characters, unravel the mystery, and try to stay out of the sun.

Pants On Fire: 07/08 to 07/15

Katie Ellison is not a liar. It's just that telling the truth is so . . . tricky. Like telling her football-player boyfriend that she's been making out with a drama club hottie. Or admitting that she can't stomach quahogs, even though she's running for Quahog Princess. But most of all, it's hard to explain what really happened the night someone spray-painted the thing about Tommy Sullivan on the gymnasium wall—the thing that made him leave town. Teen lit queen Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries) does it again.

Lucky Santangelo is back with a vengeance—still every bit as strong, sexy, and seductive as ever! But Lucky is older and wiser, and hot to reclaim her power position in Las Vegas. However, a deadly enemy from her past has resurfaced—a person determined to take everything from her, including the family she holds so dear: two sons and an out-of-control teenage daughter who is just as outrageous as Lucky herself. Like mother, like daughter. And if that old saying holds true, it's going to be one wild ride.

Michael Tolliver Lives: 06/18 to 06/25

Long-awaited by his fans and praised by critics, Armistead Maupin's latest brings us back into the life of arguably his most beloved character, Michael "Mouse" Tolliver. Now 55, Michael runs his own gardening business and ponders what it means to be an HIV-positive man looking for love in a city that has changed so dramatically since he first came of age there. Told in the first person, the novel follows Mouse as he falls for a younger man, attends to his dying fundamentalist mother (in Florida, no less), and encounters a few faces that will be very familiar to anyone who has read the Tales of the City books.

what is this?

dollaraword.com is an attempt to start a discussion about what art—and artists—are worth in our increasingly media-focused society. Award-winning author Michael Thomas Ford will write a novel as he is sponsored, at a dollar a word, to keep telling the story. Proceeds from the project will go to help other writers in financial need. For more information about Mike and the project, read the faq, read the blog, or contact Mike.
